Application Requirements

The minimum requirements for admission are:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in science (BS) or its equivalent (as determined by the Registrar’s Office) with a grade index of at least 3.00 overall and 3.00 in science subjects (on a 4.00 scale).
  • A working knowledge of both English and Spanish.
  • Graduate Record examination scores, general and advanced in a science subject.
  • Letters of recommendation; two from professors in the major field, one from a professor in another department (see below the format required).
  • An interview.
  • An essay in English with a maximum of 250 words or an interest letter with a brief description of your interest in the field.
  • Additional information form (see above the form).
  • Evidence of previous research experience (abstracts, papers, etc.)
  • Submit the application on time (before the due date of December 1).
  • Any special requirements of the Department in which the student wishes to pursue his studies (visit the department website for additional information).

Note: The basic science courses required by all the departments are: General Biology, General Chemistry, General Physics, Organic Chemistry and Calculus. Candidates are encouraged to visit the departments of interest to learn of additional requirements.

Each one of these requirements will be incorporated to the following admission formula:

[(GPA/4.0)*20] + [(GPS/4.0)*25] + (GREs% * 10) + (GREq% * 15) + (GREa% * 15) + [(RL/66) * 5] + [(I/20) * 10] + (Bonus for previous investigation/40) *10] = final score.

According to the score, each Department generates a descending order of interested students in each program. Each department sets the maximum number of students that could be admitted according to the order of merit and availability of positions. All students will be evaluated on an equal terms, regardless of race, sex or religion.

Cada uno de estos requisitos serán incorporados en la siguiente fórmula:

[(GPA/4.0)*20] + [(GPS/4.0)*25] + (GREs% * 10) + (GREq% * 15) + (GREa% * 15) + [(CR/66) * 5] + [(E/20) * 10] + (Bono investigación/40) *10] = puntuación final.

De acuerdo a la puntuación obtenida, se genera un orden descendente de los estudiantes interesados en cada programa. Cada departamento establece la cantidad máxima de estudiantes a admitirse y serán admitidos de acuerdo al orden de mérito y disponibilidad de posiciones. Todo estudiante será evaluado en igualdad de condiciones, sin distinción de raza, sexo o religión.
