El Dr. Barrera obtuvo su grado en Biolog\u00eda en la Escuela de Ciencias, Departamento de Ecolog\u00eda de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, donde su tesis fue en ecolog\u00eda de mosquitos urbanos. Obtuvo su grado de PhD (en Ecolog\u00eda) en la Escuela de Ciencias de la Pennsylvania State University, donde su disertaci\u00f3n fue sobre los factores que estructuran comunidades naturales de mosquitos y otros insectos acu\u00e1ticos. Su adiestramiento postdoctoral en el \u00e1rea de la naturaleza de las interacciones entre mosquitos que habitan en contenedores que determinan desplazamiento e invasiones de especies, fue en el Departamento de Entomolog\u00eda y Nematolog\u00eda de la Universidad de Florida. Del 1978 al 2002 fue Instructor hasta ascender al rango de Catedr\u00e1tico en la Universidad Central de Venezuela, donde tambi\u00e9n dirigi\u00f3 el Instituto Tropical en Zoolog\u00eda y el Comit\u00e9 de Biolog\u00eda y el Ambiente del Concilio Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnolog\u00eda de Venezuela. En el 2003 fue reclutado por el CDC donde dirige los esfuerzos de control de vectores tanto en Puerto Rico, el Caribe, como en EU, y ha brindado apoyo a otros pa\u00edses, como Tailandia y Colombia, . Adem\u00e1s, el Dr. Barrera es Profesor Adjunto de nuestra Escuela de Medicina desde el 2009. El Profesor Barrera es un experto reconocido internacionalmente en biolog\u00eda de vectores y es autor de 101 art\u00edculos cient\u00edficos en prestigiosas revistas revisadas por pares, adem\u00e1s de numerosos reportes t\u00e9cnicos para el CDC y presentaciones en foros nacionales e internacionales. Adem\u00e1s, El Dr. Barrera ha revisado art\u00edculos para numerosas revistas como Lancet, PNAS, American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, PLOS ONe y PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, Acta Tropica, entre muchas otras, y servido como editor de PLOS Neglected Tropical Disease y Journal of Medical Entomology, adem\u00e1s de tener una patente aprobada para una herramienta para el control y vigilancia del <em>Aedes aegipti<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Roberto Barrera is the Leader of the Entomology and Ecology Team, the Dengue Branch of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States and the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases from the US Department of Health. Dr. Barrera obtained his degree in Biology from the School of Sciences, Department of Ecology of the Central University of Venezuela, where his thesis was in ecology of urban mosquitoes. He earned his Ph.D. (in Ecology) from the School of Science at Pennsylvania State University, where his dissertation was on the factors that structure natural communities of mosquitoes and other aquatic insects. His postdoctoral training in the area of the interactions between mosquitoes that live in containers which determine displacement and invasions of species, was in the Department of Entomology and Nematology of the University of Florida. From 1978 to 2002 he began as an Instructor and was promoted to the rank of Professor at the Central University of Venezuela, where he also directed the Tropical Institute in Zoology and the Biology and Environment Committee of the National Council of Science and Technology of Venezuela. In 2003, he was recruited by the CDC where he directs vector control efforts in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and in the US, and has provided support to other countries, such as Thailand and Colombia. In addition, Dr. Barrera is an Adjunct Professor at the UPR School of Medicine since 2009. Professor Barrera is an internationally recognized expert in vector biology and is the author of 101 scientific articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, as well as of numerous technical reports for the CDC and presentations in national and international meetings.
