MEMR 7010-13<\/strong> Principles of Emergency Medicine- 80 hours, summer two weeks. Prerequisite: Student will be required to have completed their first year medicine.<\/p>\n

The course involves a series of lectures, skills stations, visit to an EMS Headquarter and clinical observation shifts. The lecture topics include basic approach to shock, initial evaluation and management of trauma, introduction to emergency medical services, airway management, immobilization of spine and extremities, EKG interpretation and arrhythmia recognition, gastric intubation and intravenous line placement techniques. Sessions usually consist of a lecture period followed by hands-on lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

MMED 7057-13<\/strong> Emergency Medicine 80-160 hours; (formal didactics 10\/20) two or four consecutive full time weeks.
\nPrerequisite: Student will be required to have completed third level Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery and OB-Gyn.<\/p>\n

The student will participate as an active member of the Resident-Faculty Team on the initial evaluation and treatment of patients in the Emergency Department at the \u201cHospital de la Universidad de Puerto Rico\u201d Dr. Federico Trilla, Carolina. He\/She will work under direct supervision at all times. Attendance to departmental didactic activities on Wednesday mornings is mandatory. One week before starting the rotation the medical student must visit the EM Department Office to get clerkship schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Clinical Shifts :<\/strong><\/td>\n\n
Students will be assigned 14-16\u00a0 shifts (160 hours) or 7-8 (80 hours) as part of a resident-faculty team. Shifts will include weekend and holidays.<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Evaluation :<\/strong><\/td>\n\n
Based on daily clinical performance and a topic presentation. Assistance to academic activities is compulsory, and participation is encouraged. Signed attendance list and anonymous E.M. rotation evaluation by the student is required at the end of the clerkship.<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

MCIR 7055-13<\/strong> Emergency Medicine Department- Research \u2013 160-320 hours. Pre-Requisites: Medicine I<\/p>\n

During the course the student will be exposing to basic aspects on clinical research, like: literature review, study design, data analysis and scientific writing. The course consists of assign lectures, meetings with course coordinator, and design of a study proposal with the course coordinator or assigned Emergency Medicine Faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
