Trends in Microbiology, a highly reputable journal in the field of Microbiology, featured the article Solutions to expand microbiome sciences in the Caribbean Region: an insider’s perspective, by Dr. Filipa Godoy-Vitorino, director of the Department of Microbiology at our campus, in its January 2025 edition.
The article highlights the importance of expanding microbiome studies in Caribbean countries due to the richness of biodiversity in the region, and the fact that despite this, it is underrepresented in global research. It is also a call to action for the academic community and the development of public policies to promote, invest in and support cutting-edge research in microbiomes.
Dr. Godoy-Vitorino is an ambassador in the Caribbean for the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME) and Global Ambassador for the Americas for Applied Microbiology International (AMI, UK). Its projects are supported by the Collaborative Research Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities of the Medical Sciences Campus and the Puerto Rico INBRE program
