{"id":134,"date":"2014-07-18T16:48:35","date_gmt":"2014-07-18T16:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/md.rcm.upr.edu\/physiology\/?page_id=134"},"modified":"2025-08-04T08:14:49","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T12:14:49","slug":"facilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/md.rcm.upr.edu\/physiology\/facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<strong>Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Student facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Study Room<\/strong>\u2013 Available for our graduate students with 3 high speed internet connections, chairs and tables for 6 students at a time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Graduate Student Lounge \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Area where graduate students can sit, have meals, and socialize.\u00a0 It has a table, chairs, a small sofa, refrigerator, microwave and small oven.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classroom:\u00a0<\/strong>A small classroom with 5 high speed internet connections is available.\u00a0 \u00a0It has 6 cubicles, two large conference tables with chairs, a projector, screen and whiteboards. The room is available to teach our graduate courses, for laboratory meetings, videoconferences and seminars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Computers are connected to internet 2 via fiber optic cables (LAN) to expedite transfer of large files, such as those generated from confocal microscopy, and by wireless access, facilitating communication and transfer of data files, with academic institutions of higher learning in PR and abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Research Laboratories\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shared department facilities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cold room for experiments that require low temperatures.<\/li>\n<li>Our\u00a0 Behavioral Suite contains ten locomotor activity chambers from Accuscan (San Diego), which can also be used for conditioned place preference tests, a treadmill, elevated plus maze, and computers with ANY-Maze and Versadax software for behavioral measurement and analysis, chambers to monitor the development of mechanical allodynia, grid walking and beam crossing set-ups to monitor coordination and locomotor balance.<\/li>\n<li>The microscope facility contains a Zeiss confocal system, an upright fluorescent microscope, a dissecting microscope, a Hamamatsu photomultiplier camera and a Zeiss color camera.\u00a0 The image analysis system consists of a computer with Image J and software from Imaging Research Inc..<\/li>\n<li>Core facility with basic laboratory equipment (analytical balances, homogenizers, vibratomes, centrifuges, etc).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>MSC Core Laboratory Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Available to all students and researchers of the MSC. These facilities house major instruments, such as ultracentrifuges, scintillation and gamma counters, plate readers, Li-COR Odyssey CLx, Seahorse XF96, among others.\u00a0 The UPR RCMI Institutional core facilities on the 6<sup>th<\/sup>floor also provides ultra-pure dd H<sub>2<\/sub>O and ice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Animal\u00a0 Resource Center (ARC)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The animal facilities occupy the 10<sup>th<\/sup>and 11<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0floor of the Main Building and houses mice, rats, hamsters, rabbits and rhesus macaques. It is staffed with 2 full time veterinarians, 3 animal health care technicians, five animal caretakers and an administrator. It complies with all NIH regulations and is approved by AALAC. The ARC contains the necessary trained personnel, specialized rooms (BL2 and BL3 laboratory spaces with appropriate hoods) and facilities to conduct animal research. \u00a0The ARC also contains surgery suites and a necropsy room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other Experimental Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The graduate students in our program will have access to state-of-the-art facilities at the University of Puerto Rico and the Molecular Sciences Research Center with a neuroscience stronghold between the UPR-Medical Sciences Campus and the UPR-Rio Piedras campus, in particular its Phase-3 COBRE Neuroplasticity center. Among them is the Neuroimaging and Electrophysiology Facility (NIEF) that is known as one of the few worldwide Nikon Center of Excellence and is equipped with the latest microscope technology for fluorescence detection. NIEF provides access to advance instrumentation in fluorescence microscopy and electrophysiology. Other centers available to our graduate students are the Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Center, the Sequencing and Genomics Facility, the Puerto Rico Center for Neuroplasticity (PRCN), and the Puerto Rico Center for Microbiome Sciences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Intellectual Resources\/Collaborations<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The UPR MSC has a 7-floor library adjacent to the Main Building.\u00a0 It contains a large number of books and is subscribed to a variety of scientific, clinical and biomedical journals.\u00a0 Many of these journals are available on-line from within and from outside of the university\u2019s LAN system. Internet access to these databases facilitates the preparation of manuscripts and grant proposal and keeps investigators and students up to date with the latest scientific findings.<\/li>\n<li>The UPR MSC and Rio Piedras Campus provide the opportunity to join areas of expertise in the design and execution of collaborative research projects.\u00a0 The campuses are located about 15 minutes away from each other. Both campuses contain core research facilities, as well as amphitheaters and meeting rooms where there are many opportunities to meet in person for laboratory discussions, journal club reunions, and seminars.\u00a0 Virtual meetings extend meeting opportunities.\u00a0 Several investigators from our Department and the Biology Department are currently collaborating on two federally funded research projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Physiology Department provides 24\/7 access to its faculty members to a high-volume copier\/printer\/scanner and a FAX machine.\u00a0 The Chair\u2019s office contains a conference table to hold department meetings, and small group discussions.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Facilities Student facilities Study Room\u2013 Available for our graduate students with 3 high speed internet connections, chairs and tables for 6 students at a time.
