Geriatric Education Center
Welcome to the University of Puerto Rico Geriatric Education Center. It is one of the Geriatric Centers funded by the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration, and dedicated to the advancement of geriatric education in the United States. It is located at the School of Medicine in the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, under the Department of Internal Medicine.
The U.P.R.-G.E.C. ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life and social services for the elderly population islandwide.
To achieve the fulfillment of this goal, the training program is addressed to:
academic and clinical faculty in health and behavioral sciences, in both the private and public university systems.
practitioners and health professionals and direct service providers working with the elderly population.
students of related disciplines, such as: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Social Work, Health Education, Physical Therapy, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, and others.
Objectives
- To train academic and clinical faculty in the health professions, practitioners, and students in geriatrics, in order to promote and improve health and social services to the elderly.
- To develop clinical practice model for the training and retraining of clinical faculty and students within an interdisciplinary approach.
- To collaborate with state agencies and professional groups to improve knowledge and coordination for the better utilization of their resources.
- To establish collaborative agreements with academic institutions community based organizations to implement educational initiatives models for older adults.
