Personal Statement

Nydia De Soto-Cordero, MD, is a board-certified Surgeon who specializes in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. After graduating from the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez Campus, Dr. De Soto received her medical degree from the UPR- School of Medicine. She then completed her General Surgery Residency at the UPR – School of Medicine as well, followed by a Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Cooper University in Camden, NJ. After completing her fellowship, Dr. De Soto moved back to Puerto Rico, where she currently works at the UPR- School of Medicine as a General Surgery / Trauma & Surgical Critical Care attending. She has received training in open and laparoscopic surgery, both of which she performs at the academic center where she works. She is a member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. De Soto has several areas of interest among Trauma, which include REBOA catheters use, management of traumatic pelvic fractures, and management of rib fractures. She enjoys being a mentor to medical students and also enjoys using technology for teaching, such as the Trauma Simulator.
