At the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus Psychiatry Department, our mission is to promote research and offer excellent clinical care to people of all ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our vision is to improve the mental health of Puerto Rico through education, research, and cutting-edge clinical care. We intend to promote mental health and well-being within our community and contribute to advancing psychiatric knowledge through innovative research and evidence-based practices. Our department is home to a diverse and accomplished faculty who are experts in their specialties. They are not only dedicated clinicians but also passionate educators. Through their expertise, our faculty members provide high-quality education, mentorship, and guidance to our residents, fellows, and medical students.

We take pride in our robust residency and fellowship programs that provide rigorous and comprehensive training experiences. Our residents and fellows can gain hands-on experience in various clinical settings, engage in research initiatives, and develop the skills necessary to provide compassionate, evidence-based patient care.

In addition to our commitment to education and clinical care, our department is actively involved in various research endeavors. We strive to push the boundaries of knowledge in psychiatry and contribute to developing innovative treatments and interventions. Our researchers are engaged in a wide range of studies, covering areas such as neurobiology, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and public mental health.

The Psychiatry Department at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, School of Medicine brings together the leaders and faculty from the Departments of Psychiatry at Hospital UPR Federico Trilla, Hospital Panamericano en Cidra, Hospital San Juan Capestrano, Hospital CIMA Menonita, Hospital Pediátrico Universitario (HOPU), Hospital ASEM – Centro de Trauma, and Hospital Pavía, into a collaborative partnership for resident and fellow training through caring for the community in this variety of settings. The UPR-RCM Psychiatry Department is committed to integrating the full range of theoretical perspectives and educational, scholarly, and clinical efforts with these affiliated institutions through close collaborations that optimize each institution’s unique strengths and expertise.

We are actively involved in community outreach programs and partnerships as part of our dedication to serving the community. We aim to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, promote mental health awareness, and provide accessible resources for those in need. We collaborate with local organizations working towards a healthier and more resilient community.

Clinical Excellence – Providing an evidence-based clinical practice

With over 42 faculty and 28 trainees across our institution, we provide a complete care continuum of behavioral health, including acute inpatient beds, stabilizing beds, partial hospital programs, emergency and crisis intervention programs, residential programs, outpatient services, and expert consultation services to medical patients with comorbid psychiatric disorders. These clinical services provided across the seven institutions include general public hospitals, public and private psychiatric hospitals, public sector settings, and public outpatient services. All services are designed to be comprehensive, multidisciplinary, evidence-based, coordinated, and cost-efficient to meet the needs of patients, families, and the community.

Educational Excellence – Educating the next generation of Psychiatrists

The UPR-RCM Psychiatry Department provides didactic and clinical learning experiences for all UPR-RCM Psychiatry Residents and Fellows, medical students, and visiting medical students from around the Island. In addition, it is one of the two psychiatry training sites in Puerto Rico for general and child psychiatry residency training. The UPR-RCM Psychiatry Department also has a post-residency child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship.

Cutting Edge Investigation – Contributing scientific discoveries of Latinos and Hispanics to the research world

With over $7M in total sponsored research funding, the UPR-RCM Psychiatry Department research faculty is among the leaders in Psychiatry Research in Puerto Rico. The UPR-RCM Psychiatry Department has several centers of excellence that work to translate these discoveries from the bench to the bedside through specialty areas, including child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatrics, clinical psychopharmacology, consultation-liaison, forensic psychiatry, epidemiology, mental health services research, and severe and persistent mental illness.
