Welcome to the Anesthesiology Department at the University of Puerto Rico!
Since its founding in 1962, the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Puerto Rico has served as a leader in perioperative medicine, pain management, and critical care for over six decades. Our team of highly trained anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, and dedicated support staff provide comprehensive anesthesia services across a wide range of surgical specialties, including general surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, cardiac, neurosurgery, and trauma. We are also leaders in acute and chronic pain management, regional anesthesia sedation, and critical care services, ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate care tailored to each patient’s needs.
Our residency program, Puerto Rico’s first and only anesthesiology training program, has proudly prepared more than 85% of the anesthesiologists currently practicing on the island. Through a structured curriculum, diverse clinical offerings, and mentorship from specialized faculty, our program provides our residents with broad, in-depth training in all anesthesiology subspecialties.
Beyond patient care and resident education, our department is deeply committed to advancing the field through research, simulation-based training, and quality improvement initiatives. Our faculty and trainees work collaboratively on projects that contribute to the scientific literature and enhance safety standards in anesthesia practice. These academic and investigative efforts are critical in our drive to continually lead and inspire the future of anesthesiology.
Whether you are a patient seeking expert care, a medical student exploring the specialty, a prospective resident, or a colleague interested in academic or clinical collaboration, I invite you to explore our webpage and learn more about what makes our department a leader in the field. As a former resident and faculty member, now honored to serve as Chair, I have come to deeply appreciate the exceptional professional and personal opportunities offered by our department. It is with great pride that I welcome you to be part of our continued journey in advancing the field and serving our community with excellence, compassion, and steadfast commitment.
Dr. Elfren Colón-Rodríguez
