Message from the Director
Welcome to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, at the Medical Sciences Campus.
Pathology is the study of disease; a discipline that links basic and clinical sciences, and as such, is the scientific foundation for medicine. Our vision is to achieve excellence in pathology education and research, employing as an instrument state-of the art diagnostic pathology services that harmonize with the University’s goal of advancing and transmitting knowledge.
We are committed to the education of over 120 undergraduate medical students, as well as pathology residents, clinicians, and other health care professionals. For over fifty years, our Pathology Residency Program, unique in Puerto Rico, holds an active accreditation status from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program is affiliated with the Puerto Rico Medical Center Institutions, providing a well-rounded pathology training. Most of the pathologists in the Island are graduates from our program.
Our department offers a diverse array of educational activities, including more than twenty monthly interdisciplinary tumor planning conferences, morbidity/mortality conferences, and clinicopathologic conferences, among others, contributing to the best of patient care and to the medical education of residents and physicians.
We provide pathology diagnostic and consultation services to patients of the Puerto Rico Medical Center and affiliated Hospitals, and Hospitals and Clinics from the community. In addition to the evaluation of conventional histopathology, our facilities include specialized laboratories such as Immunohistochemistry, Electron Microscopy, Histocompatibility, Immunology, Flow Cytometry, Parasitology, Virology and Molecular Pathology. These laboratories provide diagnostic material for teaching and research to pathology residents, faculty, students and residents of other specialties.
The Department of Pathology is proud to be an integral part and active contributor to the advancement of the knowledge in the field of Pathology in Puerto Rico.
We invite you to explore our webpage and hope that it provides a thorough vision of who we are. Please contact us if you need further assistance.
