Education

  • Dr. Keila L. Rivera-Román obtained her medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico, graduating at the top of her class.
  • She completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology in the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, where she actively participated in various research and clinical projects and was appointed Chief Resident during her last year in the program

Dr. Rivera-Román was accepted into the prestigious Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship Program in Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she completed a year of in-depth clinical training in the latest techniques for the development and interpretation of molecular and genetic tests.  She is Board Certified by the American Board of Pathologists both in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and jointly by the American Board of Pathology and the American Board of Medical Genetics in Molecular Genetic Pathology, making her the only pathologist in Puerto Rico trained and certified in the latter subspecialty.

Dr. Rivera-Román is currently an Assistant Professor in Pathology in the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, where she directs the Molecular Pathology Laboratory.  She directly aids in the training of pathology residents, other specialty residents, medical students, and health-affiliated professionals.  She also collaborates with many academic scientific scholars and current ongoing investigations in various clinical and basic sciences departments.

Dr. Rivera-Román has several peer-reviewed publications and many scientific presentations.  Her interest areas include cancer genetics, hereditary cancer syndromes, and medical genetics.
