“Dr. Federico Trilla”

The Hospital de La Universidad de Puerto Rico “Dr. Federico Trilla” opened its doors to the public in 1982. This marked the beginning of a tradition of excellence in offering quality medical and surgical health services to the population. The Hospital was acquired in 1999 by the University of Puerto Rico to strengthen and promote quality education and training to students of all the health sciences professions, while maintaining its high quality service standards. The Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission fort the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

The Hospital has the capacity for a total of 250 beds, of which 93 are assigned for Internal Medicine and Family Medicine, 50 for Pediatrics, 45 for Surgical Services, 20 for Psychiatry and 42 for Obstetrics & Gynecology. More than 10,000 patients are admitted per year to the Hospital’s different services. Patients are attended by a highly skilled staff of board certified physicians, most of which are faculty members of the University of Puerto-Rico School of Medicine. The Emergency Medicine Department receives more than 55,000 medical visits per year and provides 24-hour consultation for dental and psychiatric services. The Emergency Medicine Residency Program of the University of Puerto Rico-School of Medicine is housed in the Hospital and is accredited by the ACGME Emergency Medicine Residency Committee.

The Hospital Surgical Service provides excellent surgical services in several special care areas. Among these is the Bariatric Surgery Service, which has performed more than 1,000 bariatric surgical procedures. The Bariatric Surgery Service operates as a multidisciplinary care team responsible for pre and post surgical care, providing evaluation, care and support for patients during the entire process of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

The Hospital also provides a wide array of specialized ambulatory health services. These services operate in coordination with the Ambulatory Clinic of the University of Puerto Rico, located in the Reparto Metropolitano Shopping Center, adjacent the Puerto Rico Medical Center in San Juan, where an extensive array of sub-specialty physician care is available to the general population.

The Hospital serves as a training center for students and residents of the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico and health professions education programs from other academic institutions in Puerto Rico. The University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine residency and training programs use the Hospital facilities and patient experiences for their residents and fellows. These programs include: Anesthesia; Allergy & Immunology; Family Medicine and Geriatrics; Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Geriatrics; Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation; Obstetrics & Gynecology; Pediatrics; Dermatology; Surgery; Ophthalmology; Radiology; Otorhinolaringology, Psychiatry and Emergency. Board certified physicians with academic appointments at the UPR School of Medicine serve as faculty for these programs, as is the case with residents of the Dental Medicine School. These clinical training programs all benefit from the unique setting in which the Hospital is located and the clinical experiences their students gain from a faculty committed to the highest standards of both clinical care and teaching.
