Overview
The Critical Care Section of the Department of Pediatrics is in charge of the care of the children admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the University Pediatric Hospital. The faculty is also responsible of the teaching to medical students and residents in that sub-specialty. Faculty members are also involved in clinical research in their areas of interest.
Clinical Program
The Critical Care Section is committed to excellence in clinical service, education and research in the field of pediatric care. Services are provided mainly in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the University Pediatric Hospital which is located at the Puerto Rico Medical Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The unit has a state of the art 12 beds suites which provide care to medical as well as surgical patients. Excellent outcomes are achieved with more than 500 admissions annually.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Faculty also provides service at the Cardiovascular Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Cardiovascular Center which is located at the Puerto Rico Medical Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This unit has an outstanding capacity for 10 patients and admits approximately 300 patients annually.
Educational Program
Second and Third year residents in Pediatrics rotate, for one month each year, at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Second year residents do overnight on duty calls at the Unit. The residents work always under the close supervision of a Pediatric Intensive Care Attending Physician. This rotation provides an excellent experience sufficient to prepare the resident to recognize and manage acutely ill children. There is also an accredited training program in Critical Care Pediatric Medicine. Residents of Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine also rotate at the Unit.
Research Program
The Critical Care Section is active in clinical research. Faculty members promote research ideas and facilitate the experience for medical students and residents. Our PhD Research Coordinator helps the researcher in the development and presentation of the required research project to all fellows in the program. Statistical support is also given in all developed projects.
Community Program
Faculty members are frequent speakers at various Pediatric forums: medical meetings, radio and TV shows and newspaper interviews where they deliver current knowledge of critical care conditions in children. The faculty is actively involved in the protection of abused children, offering early diagnosis, key testimony in court and promoting prevention. The Critical Care Section strongly supports organ donation and participates actively in organ procurement activities and public education.
Training Program
During its twelve years of ACGME accreditation, the Pediatric Critical Care Program has successfully graduated 10 Pediatric Intensive Care Physicians, 80% of which are Board Certified in the specialty.
