Overview
The Gastroenterology Section is based at the University Pediatric Hospital at Puerto Rico Medical Center. The Section provides both outpatient and inpatient consultation and management services for neonates, infants, children and adolescents with gastrointestinal, liver and nutritional disorders. It is one of the largest gastroenterology services in the Island.
In patient Services
The section faculty is committed to provide consultation services to the Pediatric University Hospital 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. Transfers are accepted from the complete island of Puerto Rico, as well as the Virgin Islands. Service is trained to perform invasive procedures, such as those mentioned below.
Outpatient Services
The outpatient Service is offered mainly in the School of Medicine Outpatient Clinics and at the outpatient services at the University Pediatric Hospital. Among the services we offer are:
- Upper GI Endoscopy
- Colonoscopy
- Sigmoidoscopy
- Placement of feeding or decompression/irrigation catheters
- Polypectomy
- Foreign body removal
- Hemostasis
- Diagnostic Evaluation for IBD
- Liver Biopsy
- Nutritional Assessment
- Evaluation and Care for patients with possible Liver Transplant
- Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy
- Esophageal Varices Banding
