The University Pediatric Hospital is a dependency of the Puerto Rico Department of Health. It is the principal institution dedicated exclusively to medical services to the children in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAHO).
This hospital began offering its services since 1976 and has provided care of excellence to children along more than three decades. It gives medical, surgical as well neuro developmental habilitative services to the whole pediatric population in Puerto Rico and serves as a referral center for those in need of pediatric specialized medical services in the Caribbean Area.
It is localized in the premises of the Puerto Rico Medical Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The hospital building houses the inpatient area which has capacity for 161 beds: Pediatrics – 54 beds, 15 Hematology/Oncology Beds, 3 beds are exclusively for Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit, 30 beds for surgery service, 10 beds for the Intensive Care Unit and 49 beds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It also has ambulatory clinical facilities, state of the art clinical laboratory, Pediatric Radiological Services, Social Work Services, Hemodialysis Unit, Endoscopy and Bronchoscopy Unit, a Pediatric Emergency Room and its own Surgical Suites facilities. The hospital accepts transfer of patients from the entire Island and the Caribbean.
The hospital has a committed academic medical faculty with all the subspecialties needed to provide treatment for a pediatric population. The faculty as well as its health care team staff is well trained and has the qualifications and capacity to take good care of complicated patients. The hospital as well as its faculty gives services to patients of all array of diagnosis categories; from secondary to tertiary categories, medical and surgical.
The University Pediatric Hospital is an affiliate to the Medical Science Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. It houses students from different disciplines in the health sciences. It has an outstanding trajectory educating students, many of which have attained recognition nationally and internationally. The UPR School of Medicine Pediatric Residency Program utilizes this facility to train their residents. This program has full accreditation from the ACGME Pediatric Residency Committee.
The University Pediatric Hospital has a dedicated faculty, an excellent house staff and ancillary clinical service staff, all of them with a mission and primary goal to give services of excellence to all children that attends the institution.
